City of Covington has been selectively covering the rent and other expenses for businesses in 'bustling' downtown
Motch says rent, expenses subsidies by city 'not fair'
Posted 8:02 am / December 11, 2018
Last night, the City of Covington gave Braxton Brewery $5,717.00 to help remodel, a business constantly touted as a successful enterprise.
The city also dished out thousands of dollars to street-level businesses last night to help them pay the rent.
Want's going on? The hype from City Hall is that downtown Covington is bustling. The financial hand-outs last night and previously make that claim look like a lie.
The money being doled out by the city is also making the president of its oldest retailer, Motch Jewelers, wonder.
Tim Dwight says Motch was never told about the program.
"As a business, we were never informed of this government handout!," he wrote at Latonia News, a NKY News Network page. "How is that fair?"
He's wondering if the hand-outs are some kind of "insider deal" with city officials.
You have to wonder. If downtown Covington is bustling, why is there a need to cover the rents of dozens of street-level businesses there? And Braxton Brewery gets nearly $6000 to remodel?
The president of Motch's Jewelers thinks the hand-outs are "not fair or in the spirit of free enterprise."
"We were never told of the city's plan," Dwight says. He thinks the city should stop playing favorites and stop giving money to businesses, for the sake of fairness.
