Parents witness horror of their child ejected from vehicle on I-275

11 AM, Thursday: Taylor Mill Police say Dawson Elder, 4, is the little boy killed in an accident on I-275 Wednesday evening.

His mother, Megan Ritter, was also hurt. Ritter had pulled over when her car broke down at about 6:30 p.m. on a bridge over the Licking River.

Media has now corrected the location of the incident. Most said earlier the incident was closer to the Taylor Mill exit. It has also corrected the boy's age. Media slipped in the corrections without noting their earlier errors.

Police say another driver swerved to miss stopped traffic and slammed into Ritter's car in the emergency lane, as Sinclair Media is now reporting, changing its original story.

Dawson was thrown from the car.

Ritter and three people in the other car were taken to area hospitals.

> 7:00 AM, Thursday: Taylor Mill exit or Wilder exit?

Traditional media can not make up its mind on the location of the incident.

Most have reported "near the Taylor Mill exit " on I-275, with one posting a map showing that exit. WCPO said it occurred "near Taylor Mill Road and the AA Highway" which, of course, is geographically impossible.

Gannett Media says it was closer to the Wilder exit in Campbell County.

"The fatal crash happened on the eastbound side of I-275, east of Ky. 16 on a bridge crossing the Licking River. The crash was not far from the exit to Wilder and the AA Highway," Gannett wrote.

6:00 AM, Thursday: Another TV station has a somewhat different version of events.

Hearst Media writes, based on comments from the Taylor Mill Police, that "traffic may have suddenly stopped and the striking vehicle may have tried to take evasion action to the right and strikes the vehicle from the rear."

Hearst quoted Taylor Mill police chief Steve Knauf.

11:00 PM A 4-year-old child is dead after a crash closed down eastbound I-275 near Taylor Mill Road on Wednesday.

A mother and her child were pulled over on the side of the road. Their vehicle had broken down, reports Sinclair Media/Local 12.

They were struck by another vehicle.

It has not been reported whether the vehicle was parked on the shoulder of I-275 eastbound or was in a travel lane; and why the person driving the vehicle that struck the disabled car did not see it.

The child was ejected from the vehicle and was later pronounced dead at the scene.

The mother was taken to the hospital. The severity of her injuries is unknown. The father of the child reportedly arrived at the scene after the crash but before authorities.

He was presumably traveling to the scene to assist the mother and child since their vehicle was broken down.

The name of the child and the parents have not been released, as yet

9:00 PM: Some television media say a 3-year-old was killed in the incident.

A mother and her child were pulled over on the side of the road. Their vehicle had broken down. They were struck by another vehicle. The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

These reports confirmed an earlier post by NKY News at 7:07 pm that a child was involved, our report was deleted due to lack of confirmation.
